Why Education & DEI Matter for Organizational Change
Have you ever wondered why so many trainings feel unapproachable or ineffective? Each subject area likely has its own unique challenges, but when it comes to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), the quickest way to lose your audience is by leading with criticism. No one wants to sit in a room and be told they’re wrong, bad, or harmful. Effective training should inspire and empower, even when addressing difficult and deeply rooted issues. Similarly, education-focused training often falters when it fails to respect the expertise of educators, treating them like their own 7-year-old students. Role-playing and interactive strategies can be impactful, but only if they respect participants’ expertise and meet them where they are, acknowledging their unique experiences and professionalism.

A Journey Rooted in Purpose
Sarah Wolters Co. was born from a deep passion for education, leadership, and DEI—and a personal commitment to finding balance. As my husband and I prepared to grow our family through adoption, I realized how important it was to build a career that aligned with my passions, offered flexibility, and allowed me to prioritize my family. Teaching had been my dream since I was an outspoken five-year-old confidently assigning my younger brother his daily homework. Leaving the classroom wasn’t in the plan, but life has a way of showing us what we need. I craved a career that moved me beyond the test-driven environment, gave me space to grow, and allowed me to make a greater impact while providing stability for my family.
My transition began as a youth development specialist, where I discovered the power of tailored training programs that meet organizations where they are. Over time, I built a foundation of experience in education, DEI, and an agile mindset, which has shaped the work I do today.
My work with the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) has been especially rewarding, offering organizations and individuals the tools to assess and grow their intercultural competence. These efforts, combined with years of honing facilitation techniques and delivering materials in innovative ways, allow me to help teams and leaders make sense of big topics—fostering stronger connections and more inclusive environments every step of the way.
Making a Difference Through Action
At Sarah Wolters Co., we believe in more than just theory—we’re about putting ideas into action. Here are three simple ways you can start fostering growth and collaboration today:
Understand Cultural and Team Dynamics: Take time to learn about the unique influences, experiences, and needs within your team or organization. Tools like the IDI or team assessments can provide valuable insights to build a stronger foundation.
Prioritize Inclusive Leadership: Whether it’s in the classroom, the boardroom, or a team meeting, effective leadership sets the tone for collaboration and innovation. Start by actively listening and creating space for diverse perspectives—whether those voices belong to youth, peers, or senior leadership.
Commit to Continuous Improvement: Training and development are never one-and-done processes. Build a culture of growth by encouraging regular opportunities for skill-building, reflection, and innovation tailored to your team’s evolving needs.
